julia nunes, sloan, and ULTIMATE FIGHTING

Well, a few weeks back I helped a buddy of mine sell merchandise at an ultimate fighting things. I can’t say I’d go to another even, or ever pay to go to an event, but it was, umm… interesting? to see.

Also, I saw Lenny Kravitz with Sloan opening for him.

Which led me to want to hear “Coax Me” .

And since I sold my Sloan records in a fit of alcoholism I went to YouTube .

YouTube brought me Coax Me, AND Julia Nunes . A Ukulele cover of “Keep Fishin’” by Weezer.

So, she’s cute, she’s talented, and Ben Folds likes her. Those are three things that score high in my books.

Also, Chris Murphy from Sloan has a fucking MELON HEAD!

Knife Party – Just Like You, Only Better (2008)

I’m not a big punk rock guy. I appreciate the Sex Pistols, and I like the Ramones. There’s a couple of punk bands from around here that are in my rotation, but for the most part I stay away from it, and this is a known fact to most of my friends which is why when The Knife Party’s drummer Jedi Eric gave me their new record he said “You probably won’t like it”.

Well, I do.

The yelping unintelligible vocals from Little Danny Whore Moan were the low point of the record for me at first but became the stand out of this band. Shouting lines like “Shut up Shut up Shut Up, Shut the Fuck Up”, “We’re Just Like You, Only Better” and “River City Ransom” actually make his noise catchy.

I would tell you whom they sound like, but I really have no idea. But it’s smart, and it’s catchy and it’s quick and dirty. It has gang vocals which really only slipped up in one spot during “Clusterfuck”.

I really liked this record, and look forward to seeing this guys kill it live.

hell or high water tattoo shop

Ghandy, a tattoo artist here in Moncton finally got around to opening his own shop with his colleague Brad Dawe and decided he would have a party. He got 5 bands, a bar and a whole bunch of friends to get together and have a good time.

The mood in the building that night was absolutely fantastic. After a bit of a wait for their guitar player to show up, Moncton’s own(ly) rock-a-billy band “The Almighty Rock’n Rebels took to the stage, greased hair, stand up bass and all. They blasted through a quick set presumably from their new record. They sounded good and looked pretty good to boot.

Up after them was Ghandy’s new band, Shortsleeve. He joined them a while back and said about them “all they do is smoke and talk French!” They’re a great little punk band. Tight as all get out, and pretty catchy sometimes.

The Motorleague came on and knocked out a couple new tunes, and a couple old tunes. The ‘League are one of my favourite bands in Moncton right now and I’m REALLY looking forward to their new album, which is looking like it’s going to be called “Black Noise”, a play on their ep called “White Tape”.

Moncton punk rockers HOPE were batting clean up that night and came through in the clutch. I recognized one song from their short set, but I still found myself singing along with two others near the end of the song, which is a testament to their songwriting skills. Their professionalism and experience really shone through during this set.

Rounding out the top 5 that night was the Iron Giant. It had been a loooong time since I saw the Giant. They’ve been through 3 different guitar players in that time, finally settling on Shaun77 from Gallactus. I didn’t think it would make a difference, as most of the stage presence is taken care of by bassist PJ Dunphy and lead vocalist Chris Lewis, but their old guitar player, while he wasn’t a flashy mover was still quite a presence on stage. It made just enough of a difference for me to taken aback a bit.

All in all it was a good night. I got to catch up with 5 bands who I’d either heard but hadn’t seen, or hadn’t seen in a while. The bar next door was open so I got to catch a bit of a metal show, too and I had a few beers and got home with $0.25 more than I left with.

A few words of praise for Holiday Inn Express

Hotel rooms with Jaccuzzis and 40″ LCD screens really are the only way to travel…  There’s nothing quite like steaming in a Jaccuzzi, drinking champagne with your wife while watching the Mythbusters detonate 200 pounds of TNT in a lake.

But seriously…  Anybody looking for a hotel in the Charlottetown area should check out the Holiday Inn Express.  The rates are good, the staff are great, and the rooms, pool, and gym are all clean and in great condition.  It’s just on the outskirts of the city proper, so it’s not far from the central areas, but it’s also just a stone’s throw away from the outbound roads so it’s easy to get out to the rest of the province.  It’s a “value” priced hotel that delivers a “premium” class experience, and if I ever need a room around here in the future, I won’t look anywhere else.
